‘Place and non-place are rather like opposed polarities: the first is never completely erased, the second never totally completed.’ (Marc Auge, 1995)
Curated by Louise Winter, the exhibition Placeless, Place brought together nine national and international artists for whom the notion of site is the starting point and research subject for the process of making art. Between the polarities of place and non-place the artists explore, through a range of media, including drawing, photography, sculpture, video and installation, how and where meaning resides: is it in the context of the gallery, in the work’s execution, documentation or anecdote?
All this took place in Haltwhistle’s newest and most exciting contemporary art space, The SHED ….
Exhibition dates: Sat 17th August - Sept 21st 2013
The SHED is part of the Whistle Art Stop in Haltwhistle and is an exhibition and project space dedicated to showcasing the work of new and emerging artists from across the North East of England.
