    Another Landscape

    5th April to 26th April 2014

Representations of landscape conjure sentimental, supposedly shared visions of idealised British life; charming celebrations of a green and pleasant land.  They sit looking lovely on many a wall in many a home, comforting with a false pastoral safety.  Other landscapes gawp in awe at nature’s sublime and destructive power; human life with a fragile face.  These works tend to sit best tethered to darkened walls in imposing galleries and museums, caged.  Whether traditionally ‘chocolate box’ or deeply foreboding, our imaginings of landscapes draw us from ordered urban homes to seek ‘new rural idylls’ – perhaps for a day out picnicking or climbing rope free; perhaps in search of a new life ‘away from it all’.

another landscape shows that contemporary artists are developing many different ways to immerse themselves in rural and urban environments.  These worlds are microscopic, stripped bare, unsettling at times; earthy and textured yet also auditory and entirely digital; strange perspectives; always human.

Works by Catherine Ayres & Phil Ogg, Sophie Foster, Bridget Kennedy, John Jo Murray, Liam Owen & Stevie Ronnie, Narbi Price, and Rebecca Travis all aim to challenge perceptions of the places we inhabit, whether physical or imaged.  Set in Haltwhistle, Northumberland – a old industrial town claiming to be ‘the centre of Britain’ – situated between iconic Roman wall and bleak North Pennines, the exhibition takes place in three old nissen huts now host to contemporary arts and community-based practice. another landscape is about different ways of seeing, hearing and thinking about the world around us through strange new lenses.

another landscape is curated by Stephen Pritchard and takes place at The Shed at the Whistle Art Stop.

The SHED is part of the Whistle Art Stop in Haltwhistle and is an exhibition and project space dedicated to showcasing the work of new and emerging artists from across the North East of England.
